Brazil. The name alone evokes images of hot wax, balmy beaches, smooth naked bodies, and of course 20 year old Brazilians. But there’s other meat related stuff going on there too.
Forbes reports today that “Brazil has now overtaken China as the spam capital of the world”. Not canned meat, either – the email type, which promises great things such as donkey schlongs and women pleasing skills.
It seems that these kinds of spam spikes are par for the course with many emerging economies. As countries like India, China, and Brazil have expanded broadband access to wider swaths of the population, online security measures haven’t really given a shit. Small time gets small attention.
Global spam stats were up pretty significantly from last year: November 2009 saw an average of 250 billion spam messages per day, compared with 100 billion in November of last year.
Also, Brazil is the largest country in South America; shares common boundaries with every South American country except Chile and Ecuador.
And.. Illicit drugs: limited illicit producer of cannabis, minor coca cultivation in the Amazon region, mostly used for domestic consumption; government has a large-scale eradication program to control cannabis; important transshipment country for Bolivian, Colombian, and Peruvian cocaine headed for the US and Europe; increasingly used by traffickers as a way station for narcotics air transshipments between Peru and Colombia; upsurge in drug-related violence and weapons smuggling!!!
